Participation in book clubs increases with age, according to the BookBrowse survey, in part because empty nesters and retirees have more time, want to connect with others, and like the intellectual challenge of belonging to a book club.

Kate Grenville's novel The Secret River was well-received by reviewers and readers. Credit: Simon Schluter. Any book club member will scoff at this caricature. But it's a difficult view to dispel because although they are widespread, little is known about book clubs in Australia. We don't even know how many there are.
